Get inspiration from newspapers. Some of the most tried and true methods of creating functional design are used every day in dozens of newspapers.

In fact, I have this theory that I’m working on and it’s this. Newspapers are lame, touchy feely websites. Except instead of turning pages and getting few day old news, the internets allows for interaction to occur. I highly recommend you pick up a newspaper every morning/day/afternoon and just look at it. Don’t even read it, in fact I encourage you to avoid reading it. I’m talking about just looking at it, look how the important content is displayed, look at the carefully used typography, and carefully used emphasis.

These are tried and true methods, that people are familiar with. Take advantage of the time and work designers have put into the newspaper standard. Absorb it, and innovate with the webs possibilities of interaction. Just don’t start labeling pages B3 or D5.

Great thinking - its this kind of process thinking that the people “who get it” , come from.
I agree - Great article. What newspaper is your favorite? And did you hear that the NY Times is now allowing all of its archives to be viewed for free?

Hmm I’ve got a few faves, so far I’m really diggin the New York Times, it’s super clean, the photography is fantastic, and the layouts are generally creative. They cram in a ton of content yet the focus is clear, and the information is digestible.
So definitely the NY Times is a current fave. The Globe and Mail is rather awesome too. They all have they’re moments, some are just few and far between haha.
[…] winning newspaper designs. Definitely go and check these out, just absolutely stunning. I wrote a post about this exact concept a few months back, I’m glad to see it’s spread to […]
